The star striker is finally back from a series of long-term knee injuries but he is struggling to find space in a team that is ticking along nicely. The 28-year-old is somewhat trapped as he needs to play in order to get back to form but the occasional appearance in the Europa League is not enough, even though he has shown his respect to the Viola by accepting a pay cut.

Sampdoria, Bologna and Liverpool have been named in connection with the American-born striker and a move seems likely if he wants to be in contention for a place in Italy’s Euro 2016 squad.

A permanent farewell is difficult to imagine considering the patience the club have invested in the striker but both parties may be ready, even if begrudgingly, to accept that it is time for a fresh start.
